On Saturday, scientists from NASA announced a newly discovered barren planet, only to have online commenters point out that they were looking at North Dakota.
On the original Facebook post, NASA Chief Scientist Dr. James Green explained how they made the discovery: “Our telescopes on the ISS were picking up some really unique terrain, so we punched in the coordinates and sent down a fresh rover to investigate. We could hardly believe how similar this new planet is to Mars. As always, we’re on the hunt for any signs of intelligent life, but no traces so far.”
Before the social media post got taken down, several people commented that there was a “Welcome to North Dakota” sign in the background of one of the rover pictures.
As always, celebrity physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson weighed in on Twitter: “Frankly, I knew this would happen sooner or later. North Dakota’s topography is basically identical to Mars. Plus, people don’t realize how easy it is to get turned around in space. Hire me NASA lol.”
